Game of WW2 British vs Germans in Normandy.

Using Chain of Command 2 in 28mm.

Using terrain and models by Jeremy Dowd.

Organized and Umpired by Jeremy Dowd.

AAR by Gary, with some minor additions by the editor.

Players

British : Jeremy D, Bryn, Andy, Gary and David M.

German  : Simon, Stephan and Mark.

Club Saturday and I participated in a 28mm game of COC2 set up by Jeremy D and being a big battle type game (Jeremys house rules) set in Normandy with 5 British and 3 German players.

Really nice terrain from Jeremys collection immersed us in Normandy style surroundings.

British under Jeremys overall command (and some Battalion assets) with Andy controlling our armoured contingent (2 M4, a Firefly, a Humber AC, 2 Churchills and a Recce section in Bren Carriers) and with Bryn, Dave M and my own wee self commanding an Infantry Platoon each.

Germans under Simon with Mark and Stephen controlled 2 PzGr Platoons, several support units (MGs, Flamwerfer and 2 Stugs) with some barbed wire, minefields and booby trapped/mined road verges.

Both sides had Mortar support.

British had an initial phase line to capture which would release a fresh set of Infantry Platoons to replace the initial Company and its losses before pushing on to try to capture a couple of bridges and a farm complex.

I controlled our right flank, Bryn our left with Dave and Andy in center.

After Patrol/Jump Off phase the British were slowed by an accurate Hun mortar barrage catching a section and supports in a wood in center.

On my flank I managed to capture a phase line objective in church whilst thankfully being mostly unscathed from an ambushing MG42 team which was dispatched quickly by supporting Sherman fire.

Bryn captured an objective on his flank and then boldly charged onto the central objective again luckily surviving after running the gauntlet of an ambushing MG42.

This ended initial phase and set up another Patrol Phase which allowed me to place 2 Jump Off points well along the enemy flank.

Phase 1 and British advance covered by a Smoke Barrage

Initial phase line approximately along road (my initial objective in church tower)

Daves section in wood was soon Pinned by Hun mortars as Andy brings on Recce section in Bren Carriers, with Bryn moving through the walled orchard

My chaps about to occupy church

With 2 objectives in British hands and the barrage moving off from Davids platoon, the pressure was on to get the third objective at the cross roads. The Germans deployed an MG 42 and attacked Bryns section, with little effect, allowing Bryns section to run to get last objective.

So the British win Phase A.

This second phase saw my Platoon advancing well forward on right (including moving a Jump Off point) but coming under a deluge of ambushes from MG42s, PzGrenadiers, a 75mm Infantry Gun and 2 Flamewerfer teams (their 12 dice very nasty as they cancel cover and deal double shock).

Bryn was slowed by having to move around the minefields and wire with Dave M eventually being able to push through to support my dwindling numbers (my lot felt well out on a limb for a period).

Andys Shermans gave sterling support fire collapsing 2 buildings and routing a unit of PzGr.

2 Stugs appeared but were only able to engage our infantry (lots of 2" Mortar smoke).

Andy did bring his Firefly forward to engage but soon beat a hasty retreat after surviving being engaged by an ambushing Panzer Faust team !!

Time ran out and a draw was declared as whilst German left had mostly collapsed us British were still well shy of the final objectives.

Great stuff with some lovely kit and a lot of work put in by Jeremy to set up and run the game and I seem to have failed to photograph a single British tank or Stug !! [ Fortunately I did , the Editor ]

Dave units move in center as Bryn circumvents mined areas

My blokes in house being given severe suntans by flamewerfers in opposite building (one flame team was dispatched and another immediately popped up !!)

Bryns men line hedges

Furthest advance by British on right, This section survived by remaining in Tactical Mode

Scuffle at Osgiliath.

Game of Lord of the rings.

Using Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game.

Using terrain and models by Chris Caves.

Organized and Umpired by Chris Caves.

AAR by Chris Caves.

Players : David Smylie, Jeremy Nixon.

Quick AAR for last months Lord of the Rings game or should I say MESBG ( Middle earth strategy battle game as it is called now ).

Set in Osgiliath the battle saw the orcs attacking against the forces of Gondor / Minas Tirith armoured warriors supported by Ranger allies.

This was an introductory game for a number of people who had not played before, so the forces and characters were kept simple 3 characters and approx. 30 infantry each side

The rule system is probably the one GW rule set that actually works and gives a good game.

The figures were 28mm Games Workshop from their release circa 2000 to co-inside with the hobbit trilogy of films

The range of figures is truly extensive and the sculpts are excellent  --- Many Perry creations

The scenery was a scratch built table I made for games workshop over 20+ years ago -- which was used as a shop display.

Some photos from the game.

Ga Pa.

Game of ECW Parliamentarians vs Royalists.

Using Pikeman's Lament in 28mm.

Using terrain and models by Ian.
Organized and Umpired by Leslie.
AAR by Leslie.

Players
Royalists               : Billy and Phil.
Parliamentarians  : Leslie and Paddy.

An English Civil Wargame was arranged to try The Pikeman's Lament rules from Osprey.  The game was organised by Leslie using Ian's excellent figures. The players were Billy and Phil ( Godless  Royalists) and Leslie and Ian ( Saintly Parliamentarians).

The armies were organised as follows,

Royalists

  • 2 units of Elite Gallopers (Armoured  Attack Cavalry).
  • 1 unit of Forlorn Hope (Elite Assault troops).
  • 2 Raw Shot.
  • 1 Shot.
  • 1 Regimental Light gun.
  • 1 unit of Pike.
  • 2 Commanded Shot (Skirmishers).

Parliamentarians

  • 4 units of Trotters ( Cavalry capable of limited firing).
  • 1 Regimental Light gun.
  • 2 units of Commanded Shot.
  • 1 unit of Gallopers.
  • 1 Shot.
  • 2 units of Pike.

The scenario was for the "Ga Pa" mission as outlined in the rule book. This mission is based on destroying a greater number of enemy units than you lose. The difference in points scored being the deciding factor.

The battlefield as the belligerents arrive (Editor).

The game began with the Parliamentarians occupying the woods on their left with Shot and sending a unit of Commanded Shot into a walled enclosure to their front. The Royalists advanced into the village opposite with Shot, Commanded Shot and the Forlorn Hope. They then advanced their gun to fire on the Parliamentarian Commanded Shot in the enclosure.  Unfortunately the Gun failed to activate and  the Parliamentarian Commanded Shot then skirmished out of the enclosure inflicting casualties on the gunners. The Royalist gunners failed their subsequent morale test and fled the table. Attempts by the Parliamentarian gun to fire continually failed over the next series of moves. At this point the Royalist commander went on the defensive and stubbornly remained in the village.

On the other flank after some initial and rather ineffective maneuvering  by both sides Phil skillfully used his Shot unit to block a flanking move by the Parliamentarian Trotters who were forced to withdraw back towards a hill and wood in their rear. Phil followed up this move with a rapid advance with his Elite Gallopers.  They  bravely charged and despite having no other troops in support broke two units of enemy Trotters and a unit of Gallopers including the Parliamentarian commander. This however led to the demise of both of Phil's  units of Elite Gallopers including his general.  One Royalist unit had succumbed in combat to a third unit of Parliamentarian Trotters  and the other had been forced to follow up into a unit of formed Pike and so suffered the inevitable consequences.  It was a matter of great embarrassment to both sides that when their armies took morale tests for the loss of their generals not one unit was in the least upset!

On the opposite flank the Parliamentarian gun finally got to fire and routed a unit of enemy Commanded Shot. Return fire from the Royalists in the village then forced the gunners to rout.  The Parliamentarian Commanded Shot once again left the enclosure and  advancing took control of the main building in the village . From the safety of the building they inflicted casualties on the unit of Royalist Shot in the village causing them to flee the table. The Royalist commander refused to commit his unit of Forlorn Hope into combat in the building and so they remained in the open to be sniped at by the enemy Commanded Shot.

The game ended with the Parliamentarians winning by one point in what had been a very bloody action. The rules worked well and despite using the same mechanisms as Lion Rampant had enough variations to work in their own right and provide a fun game.
